Responsibilities:
As a Trustee of the IISS oversees the financial and investment sides of the Institute’s activities. Member of the IISS Council, Trustees and Audit Committee.

- International Relations, particularly South Asia, Eastern Europe (including former Soviet Union) and Spain
Background:
Graduate of New College, Oxford (first class honours in Classics, Philosophy and Ancient History). Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, 1951-73, 1987-9 and since 1997.
Member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1951 to 1987. Served in London (foreign Office and Cabinet Office), Bonn, Nicosia, Tel Aviv, Saigon, Madrid (minister 1973-7), Moscow (Minister 1977-9) and New Delhi (High Commissioner 1982-7). Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet 1979-82.
Executive Director of Barclays Bank (formerly Barclays de Zoete Wedd) 1987-99; Vice-Chairman 1994-9. Senior Consultant to British Invisibles plc 1999-2001.
Chairman Anglo-Spanish Society 1995-8. Chairman London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) 1990-9.
Married Sally Marris 1962. One daughter, one son. Lives in London and Gloucestershire.
