The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the world’s leading authority on political-military conflict, has a vacancy in its Washington DC office for the position of Special Assistant and Operations Manager.
The Washington office (IISS-US), incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organisation, is a vital component of the IISS structure, representing and promoting the Institute in the United States. The office:

Manages and develops IISS relationships at a senior level with US government agencies such as the Department of Defense, the State Department and others involved in national security affairs

Plays an important part in planning and preparing annual IISS Regional Security Summits in Asia and the Persian Gulf, as well as other events, which feature cabinet-level official delegations from the US

Holds a busy schedule of meetings, roundtables, briefings and special events in Washington on key foreign and defence policy questions, catering for a distinguished audience of current and former US government officials, the wider diplomatic community, legislators, academics, private experts and leading members of the press

Helps to develop the IISS Research Programme by engaging the expert community in the US.

Raises funds from US philanthropic foundations, individuals and corporations to support IISS activities and research both in the United States and internationally

Promotes the Institute’s extensive range of renowned publications and journals

Provides services for and grows the Institute’s extensive US-based Membership, which is composed of both Individuals and a wide array of Corporations
Working to and supporting the Executive Director, the Special Assistant and Operations Manager will be active across all of these functions, playing a key role in the implementation of plans for the further development and growth of the office. They will have responsibilities regarding day-to-day office management and administration. The post-holder will liaise closely with counterparts at other IISS offices in London and Singapore, and will be expected to travel internationally from time to time.
The successful applicant will:

Have strong professional experience and knowledge of one or more of the following areas: the not-for-profit sector; ‘think tanks’ and academia; government; the corporate sector

Have an excellent academic background and a demonstrable interest in international affairs

Possess outstanding communication, IT, organisational, administrative and event-management skills, with a meticulous eye for detail

Possess experience of or interest in development and fundraising
-
Enjoy working on a wide range of projects and initiatives as part of a small but entrepreneurial team
